Snow | Chicky clinics Trip Mayrhofen 10-17 March 2012

The 10th of March I travelled to the Austrian town of Mayrhofen for an action packed week long holiday full of ”fun, girls and learn riding”. That is the slogan of Chicky clinics: the business of Dutchie Sanne de Jong that organizes girls-only clinics in extreme fun sports. The mission of Sanne and her team is to increase the amount of women in extreme fun sports all year round and improve their skills. During summer that is surfing, SUP’ing, wake- skate- and kiteboarding. During winter that is freestyle snowboard and freeski clinics.

And that is exactly what this week in Mayrhofen was all about: making progress in your snowboard and ski skills aimed at learning new tricks in the funpark! All of that with a healthy dose of fun, laughs and sun! I can already say, that target is achieved aplenty! I still have a goggle face from the sunny days on the mountain and I am still in an “I can conquer the world”-mood. But you are all curious about how the week went, right?

Well, in my case the journey started on a Saturday morning, on which I got onto the Chicky Volkswagen van in Breda together with 8 other girls. Our drivers a.k.a. ski and snowboard coaches consisted of the Dutch Nikita Team; Sanne (ski), Dees and Christel (snowboard). Around 6 o’clock we arrived at Gasthof Zillertal – where we would stay in a dorm with bunk beds for the week – and met the rest of the group. After dinner it looked like it was everybody’s birthday, due to the goodie bags that where spread around and… handing out of not only the test snowboards and skis from Salomon and Elan, but also the brand new Nikita boards for coming season!

From Sunday until Thursday we got where we came for in the first place: freestyle snowboard and freeski coaching! Dees took the snowboard chicks, Christel took the one and only grown-up grommet Eline for some kick start snowboard lessons and Sanne took the ski chicks, including me. First the basics at the slopes, but from day 2 also at the Vans Penken Park. In one of the latest Cooler Magazine editions, this funpark is ranked 8th in the top 10 of the world. Oh yeaaah rock ‘n roll girly style! Tuesday we got even more tips during the video analysis after dinner. The last day of coaching, Thursday, was all about training for and participating in the Best Trick Contest. Landing or crashing, the adrenaline was pumping and the overall good mood was obvious! Even more Vans, Nikita and Salomon goodies came our way that night for categories like ‘coolest crash’ and ‘most creative move’. Straight and sideway box slides, 180s and 360 across the kickers, we owned that babypark at the end of the week!

Next to this progression thing, we all hang out at lunch at the Grillalm below the park, making up our minds what to do in the afternoon. Mostly this consisted of more flying over the kickers and killing those boxes, where after most of the girls went for a tour around the area until the cable car back to the village almost shut down. That is was I call making the most out of your day! We even challenged ourselves by riding the Harakiri slope; it has an average incline of 78% and there are no steeper groomed slopes in Austria. Hell yeah! The last day we decided to explore the Hintertuxer Gletscher for some slope shredding in the sun!

Our “Après-ski Team” was a permanent visitor of the Eisbar and on Friday we all went there to finish of this amazing week in Austrian style. Also in Gasthof Zillertal there was the Moustache Monday Karaoke, where we started of the night pretty impressive with our “Who run the world? Girls!”-performance. Wednesday it was time for the Swagger Party in that same Riders Lounge, whereby the Jägerbombs were flowing like a mountain river. After the Best Trick Contest during the day we got even more inspiration by watching The Art of Flight with snowboard king Travis Rice during the Movie Night. No chick flicks there!

My conclusion can be brief: it was an awesome week, which I will truly never forget! Thanks Chicky clinics, Dutch Nikita Team – Sanne, Dees and Christel – and all other girls that made it one hell of a “fun, girls and learn riding”-week. Maybe I will see you next year… or during the Chicky clinics Trip to Morocco in October for some serious surfing!

Either way, keep shredding y’all!

xoxo Annemarie

Surf | Sally rings it again!

Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 21, has claimed victory at the 2012 Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bells Beach presented by Ford Fiesta over Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 24, in offshore four-to-five foot (1.5 metre) waves at Bells Beach.

The second stop on the 2012 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour, the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bells Beach enjoyed a week’s worth of excellent waves and the world’s best female surfers rose to the occasion in fine fashion.

In a hard-fought Final, it was Fitzgibbons who was able to stave off a late charge from Gilmore and claim the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bells Beach for the second year in a row.

“I’m speechless,” Fitzgibbons said. “I’m so pumped. That was tough. Bells went to sleep on both of us and it got real tactical at the end. Steph (Gilmore) only needed a small score and I just hung on for dear life. That wave she took at the end looked so small and I had a feeling there was going to be another set, but there wasn’t. I just can’t believe I won Bells two years in a row!”
